In the pivotal year of 1990, set against the backdrop of a rapidly changing Soviet Union, Yuri finds himself in the heart of Odessa, Ukraine, engaged in the rebellious act of producing a record.

This is no ordinary project; the track, "Soviet Bloc," is imbued with the spirit of Mikhail Gorbachev's Glasnost and Perestroika, representing a bold critique of the crumbling Soviet regime. The record's controversial nature puts Yuri in imminent danger, forcing him to devise a daring escape plan amidst the political chaos of the dissolving Soviet Union.

Yuri's unconventional escape involves a gender disguise and an audacious entry into the athletics world championships as a female shot putter. His successful departure from the crumbling Soviet landscape leads him to the shores of Melbourne, Australia. Here, the warm embrace of the local Ukrainian community provides him a new home and a fresh start.

In this unexpected setting, Yuri's life takes a serendipitous turn when he meets Stephen Kearney, affectionately known as Special K. Despite their disparate backgrounds, the two men find common ground in music. Yuri, with his basic but unique computer programming skills honed on outdated Soviet technology, and Special K, with his access to musical equipment and a passion for sound, forge a partnership that would redefine their destinies. Adopting the moniker "Special K and Main Man Yuri," they venture into the music scene with their debut track, "Oh Yeah," testing the waters of Melbourne's inner city clubs.

Their journey from modest club performances to mainstream recognition is fraught with challenges. The Australian music scene, still unacquainted with R&B and resistant to the international dance music wave, initially greets them with skepticism. However, the tide begins to turn when Central Station Records, struck by the unique blend of their music, offers them studio space and eventually signs them to a record deal. Their song "Absolutely Perfect" becomes a cultural phenomenon, catapulting them from the local Australian circuit to the international stage in Los Angeles.

Yet, the glittering world of fame is not without its pitfalls. The duo's relationship is tested as they navigate the trappings of success, indulging in the excesses of partying and drugs. Tensions reach a boiling point when Yuri discovers Special K's clandestine plans to embark on a solo career, aspiring to transition into the realm of adult contemporary music, reminiscent of icons like George Michael and Wham. This betrayal, coupled with a horrific accident that leaves K scarred by fire, strains their partnership beyond repair.

Their attempted public reunion years later, marked by a performance titled "Cooking in the Kitchen," ends in disaster. K's post-accident appearance, misinterpreted by the audience as a misguided attempt to mimic another race, leads to their humiliating expulsion from the stage. The fallout from this event casts a long shadow, resulting in a three-decade silence between the once inseparable pair.

The narrative of Yuri and Special K, however, finds its redemptive arc thirty years later. Amidst the backdrop of a benefit concert for Ukraine, the estranged musicians are brought together once more. The performance of "Into the Light" symbolizes not just their personal reconciliation, but also serves as a poignant reminder of the enduring power of music to heal, unite, and transcend the darkest of times.

This moment, emblematic of their journey from the depths of political turmoil and personal strife to the pinnacle of artistic collaboration, closes the chapter on their tumultuous history, leaving a legacy of resilience, redemption, and the transformative power of music.

The musical is designed to be played in clubs, RSLs and venues where 90s night is the nostagic klub night
